The Mountaineering Club of Alaska is a 501(c)(7) non-profit corporation, founded in 1958, whose mission is to maintain, promote and perpetuate the association of persons who are interested in promoting, sponsoring, improving, stimulating and contributing to the exercise of skill and safety in the Art and Science of Mountaineering.
Since its founding, the MCA has been promoting mountaineering, hiking, climbing and skiing and the preservation of the outdoors and wilderness. More recently this includes kayak and packrafting access to these activities.
The MCA also offers training events and sponsors several awards in recognition of contributions to mountaineering and the MCA.
MCA is also active in promoting conservation, protecting the environment, helping with trail maintenance in our parks and recreation areas, and in helping to preserve some of the mountaineering history and place names of Alaska.
The MCA is based in Anchorage. We meet socially once a month at which climber presentations of activities (local, state and abroad) are shown. These meetings are open to the public. The meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM at the BP Energy Center, 900 E. Benson. Map. Check the Events Calendar for the latest details on club meetings and other MCA events.
The MCA maintains the Vin Hoeman library, a portion of which is accessible at Anchorage REI. The library contains a variety of mountaineering literature, rare books, guidebooks, scrapbooks of climbs and rescues in Alaska, and bound editions of all past club newsletters. This is an excellent source for research climbs done in the state. Check the Library page for more details.
The UAA Consortium Library houses the Grace and Vin Hoeman Collection in its third floor Archives Section, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays (except holidays). The Grace and Vin Hoeman Collection contains the Hoemans’ files of correspondence, photos, notes, maps, and excerpts from publications pertinent to mountaineering in Alaska and northwestern Canada.

This list, as compiled in 1996 by Willy Hersman and amended by subsequent Executive Committees, is a complement to the club By-laws and Articles of Incorporation. By definition, a policy is a consistent method of applying rules or an approved course of action for club issues, functions and operations. Some policies in the past became part of the by-laws, which made them more official and harder to change
